fragment loops / of glittering world is a work in three forms. four looping compositions performed using synthesizer and tape. four texts in language that performs the same fragmentation it describes. four signal scores made by running a diné saddle blanket woven by my cheii’s sister through digital processing until the weave becomes distorted image, held at the threshold of recognition. the work is a conversation with extraction. with the taking of ore and clay and mineral and material from earth. with the systems that make that taking not only possible but beautiful. with the glittering world, which is what it is, which has always been what it is.

fragment loop I

perpetual formation. already moving. material through heat and pressure through durations with no human measure, ore threading through stone in slow conversation with water with weight with low continuous frequency of its own formation, no ledger, no instrument, no name recording movement. shimmer inside unbroken stone not a commodity. in relational acoustic world preceding, preceding boundary, preceding the engineering that registers as background. hands moved through this. warp and weft in slow conversation, each thread finding its place in relation to every other, pattern emerging not from single decision but from accumulation, from knowledge of how to make something continuous from something that arrives in pieces. loop begins here or was always here, dense and sustained, every tone in relation, a path between states visible only from certain distances only in certain light, not beginning, not ending, already present when attention arrives, already exceeding bandwidth of what arrived later to name it. world is already glittering. loop holds this. cycles it. knows what comes next.

erosion of collectivity. road before road. survey before line. a name pressed into surface of a name already there, sonic dispossession reorganizing acoustic field before anything is visibly displaced, a hunger moving through and leaving it narrowed, leaving it contracted around single point of declared value, leaving it beautiful in a new and terrible way.

one tone asserts. others fold into service. what was simultaneous becomes hierarchical, what was relational becomes material, what was material becomes resource and synthesis narrows toward this, timbral landscape reorganizing around what has decided it is what matters, weave passed through processing and pattern begins to break, interlocking loosens, threads that were in relation now isolated, geometry of blanket distorting toward something that carries original inside it without returning to it. refined signal has clarity full relational field did not. this is true. undeniable. glimmer of isolated thing is real and made entirely from what was taken and loop does not choose, both arrive on every pass, beauty and violence in same frequency, both substance of this world, cycling, neither resolving into other, neither canceling out. managed audibility is also beautiful. that is the whole problem.

displacement and removal. a naming. name becomes boundary becomes record becomes truth of what was there, archive saving what it chooses and calling choosing complete, frequency preserved and relationship that generated it not preserved because relationship cannot be refined cannot be made portable cannot be made to glimmer in way that travels. blanket in a vitrine. weave in a catalog. pattern lifted from lineage and entered into different ledger, hands that made it not entering with it, relational acoustic world that held it not entering with it, only what could be filtered into legible and circulable form. what remains is managed tone. held at fixed distance from itself. rough frequencies attenuated until what is left is clean enough to circulate, legible enough to celebrate, portable enough to carry away from field that generated it and into bandwidth of institutional recognition. dithered image at threshold of legibility, saddle blanket still present in distortion, maker's hands still present in weave, both receding from recognizable form without disappearing, persisting below threshold of what managed audibility can accommodate. something persists. underneath management, inside sustain, attenuated frequencies still influencing signal built to exclude them, preserved tone drifting, small dissonances opening in clarity, glimmer flickering at edges of frame, no announcement, only accumulation, only slow return of what was engineered to stay gone.

collectivity re-emerges. lightning crosses without asking. wind through fence without acknowledging fence, a return from places not meant to be survived, world not going back to what it was before but sustaining life again differently, carrying full knowledge of what was consumed and what consuming did not resolve, field reopening, tones returning to their own duration their own rate their own slow conversation with frequencies around them, not restored, changed, history of narrowing inside reconstituted field, weave reconstituting at different resolution, pattern present but marked by what it moved through, great-aunt's hands still in it, still in thread, still in frequency that dispossession could not fully reach, still in relational acoustic world that fragmentation could not fully engineer away. glimmer distributes. spreads back across full range. harder to isolate now, harder to lift from field that generates it, harder to make portable without losing what makes it what it is, harder to refine without remainder, harder to filter into only what institutions can recognize and circulate. glittering world in its full condition. simultaneous. dense. taking and made thing and cost of making all present in same frequency at same time, loop cycling without resolution, still in potential, still in relation, still sounding below and beyond bandwidth of managed audibility, still at frequency of a world that was glittering before refinement began and will be glittering when refinement is done. saddle blanket and synthesis and language all running same source through same method, all carrying same lineage, all exceeding same legibility. loop returns to its beginning. same place. changed.
