Transmission Distortion

Works produced while in residency at Skowhegan 2023. Light sculpture installed in tree. This work began as imagining language existing in the trees. The impulse then lead to identifying specific trees that I wanted to work with - photographing them, and then drawing them. I starting making photoshop mockups of what I thought the language would be. The idea was playing in the space of concepts and words that exist in English and not in Navajo and vice-verse. I thought of 7 letter words that could represent ideas like volatile, or explosive, or erupt. What ended up happening in that I mistakenly assigned a font to the word that I didn’t have the font library for, therefor the work ends up showing up as just the boundary boxes of each letter. The boundary boxes are they rotated vertically and installed into the eroded portion of a tree.
